Local Information

We've put together some information about travel and accommodation in Pasadena. We will keep updating this page with further information, and let us know via kickoff@great3challenge.info if you have any questions!

Travelling to Pasadena
Most people will be flying into the Los Angeles area, and the two most convenient airports for Pasadena are:

Of the two, BUR is closest to Pasadena but LAX is a major hub served by many airlines. To get from either airport to Pasadena you can take a shared ride shuttle such as SuperShuttle, which provides a reliable and inexpensive service from the airport to any address. Public transport is available around Los Angeles but it does not have the coverage of some other major cities, so a shared shuttle is recommended.

Staying in Pasadena
Two comfortable and very reasonably priced options for staying near to the meeting location are:

Nearer to Old Town Pasadena & Paseo, but slightly upscale are:

Meeting Location
We've made a simple Google Map showing the location of the Hotels above in relation to the Keith Spalding Building, where the Kickoff Meeting will be held. Talks will be in Room 410, on the 4th floor, accessible via elevator from the main entrance.

The Keith Spalding is labelled as building 6 on this map of the Caltech campus.

Registration Information

Official registration is now closed, but please do contact us if you wish to attend!

To register, please e-mail kickoff@great3challenge.info by Friday 26 July 2013 (or 15 July if you are requesting travel support) and let us know:

  1. Are you definitely planning to attend, or are you seriously considering it?

(We can extend registration later than Friday 26 provided that we have at least a general sense for how many people are still trying to finalize their plans.)

  2. If you are unable to attend in person, would you like to attend remotely by phone/skype/video?

(So that we can make sure to have the proper facilities in place.)

  3. Do you need travel support?

(We have some funds to help primarily junior researchers and/or those traveling a long distance. This support must be requested by July 15, and we will notify those who request support about the availability of funds by July 19.)

  4. Would you be interested in a guided tour of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory on the afternoon of Thursday 22 August?

(If so we will need to collect some additional details from you. JPL has led many of NASA's pioneering space missions, including the recent Mars Curiosity Rover. We are allowed to bring a maximum of 20 people, so requests to join the tour will be on a first come, first served basis.)

  5. Are you interested in giving a talk, or is there some lensing / shape measurement development you'd be interested in hearing about? (If so, we'll try to include your talk in the schedule, time-permitting.)
